We sampled the Beyond Meat burger last week, scroll down to see what we thought... If you tend to avoid meat or opt for vegan diet, then chances are you'll have heard of the latest brand taking the plant-based world by storm - Beyond Meat.
We'd heard of them and seen them on social media etc. but were never really overly fussed about trying their products. That was until we were scouring the menu at one of our favourite lunch/brunch spots, Ottolounge in Heswall, when we spotted it - the 'Beyond' Cheese burger. For £11.95 you were served a 'plant-based vegan burger patty from Beyond Meat, with lettuce, tomato, pickled red onion, vegan smoked gouda cheese and burger sauce.' When it first arrived what struck us instantly was its similarity to a 'normal' beef burger. The colour and textured exterior mimicked meat perfectly and once broken, the inside was pinky red which really resembled a medium to well done cooked burger patty. After a couple of mouthfuls it became quite obvious that this burger was in a different league to any other plant based burgers we've had before - if similarity to meat is what you're going for. For example, Aldi's beetroot burgers are great, but still have the earthy taste synonymous with the vegetable so it's never like eating real meat, but the beyond burger perfectly encapsulates a real beef burger in the form of pea proteins, without the soy, gluten and cholesterol of meat. The vegan cheese melted (what!) and the burger sauce and accompanying fries and slaw were delicious. We would definitely recommend the Beyond Meat burger, and can see them going down a treat now BBQ season is almost upon us! If only we could think of a perfect plant based dessert to follow...
